Vintage Hawaiian Shirts and
clothing
The vintage Hawaiian shirts are those shirts
that were originally designed with the typical
Hawaiian scenes of hula dancers, pineapple and
palm trees. These shirts were designed in the
1930's by Ellery Chun, a dry goods manufacturer
and Yale graduate. Mr. Chun began manufacturing
these shirts in his family's dry goods business
in downtown Honolulu. The original shirts
designed by Mr. Chun were printed on a heavy
silk, or a high quality rayon and cotton.
Certainly, most people could not afford this
heavy silk or even the high quality rayon and
cotton blend, so the shirts were too expensive
for the average Hawaiian when they were first
manufactured. The shirts were, however, bought
by wealthy Hawaiian tourists and Hollywood film
stars who delighted in wearing them to special
events.
There are still many vintage Hawaiian shirts on
the market today. They are usually more
expensive than the more modern Hawaiian shirts.
The uniquenesss, quality and elegance of these
vintage Hawaiian shirts makes them very
difficult to find today. In fact, it is not
unusual for these shirts to sell for several
hundred dollars apiece, and although they are
quite expensive, they continue to have a place
in the fashion world. They also continue to
attract attention and make for interesting
conversation pieces.
Vintage Hawaiian shirts can actually be
beautiful works of art, with their unique
designs and color schemes, and they continue to
keep their stylish appearance. They are still
quite popular at social events, especially
during the summer months when sipping tropical
drinks out by the swimming pool or at backyard
barbeques and other social events. A person will
certainly stand out in a crowd when wearing his
vintage Hawaiian shirt, especially if he has
that sun-kissed summer tan.
